Some kids have a party and get all glammed up in their WAY too short dresses and have a lavish Sweet 16 party for their 16th birthday. When you’re the daughter of a photographer, you have a Sweet 16 Photo Shoot, of course! And when you LOVE Why Don’t We, you have a concert to start the photo shoot weekend
When Kendra decided that what she REALLY wanted for her 16th birthday this month was to go see Why Don’t We in Fairfax, VA, I asked if she would want to have a photo shoot in Washington DC while we were there. So the planning began. I scouted locations online and outfits everywhere we went. Countless hours spent on Shien to find the right outfit and accessories. It seemed like we had plenty of time, but as we all know, TIME FLIES! Before we knew it, it was April 4th and we were loading the car with Kendra, her BFF and 2 of her sisters, plus all of the outfits and shoes and photography equipment.
As we watched the weather for the day of the shoot, I could tell we were going to have to change our plans. you’ve heard the saying “You make plans, God laughs”? Yeah, that was this weekend! So we went with the flow. Thursday nights concert was a total success, as was the late night visit to IHOP where we all laughed so hard our ribs hurt the rest of the weekend. Friday, we slept in and explored Washington, DC. I spent more on parking than I did on food, I’m sure, but I was proud of myself for driving all through the city and not killing us or anyone else! We visited Madame Tussauds and got pictures with celebrities!
We visited some of the National monuments and I got to see the cherry blossoms for the first time. I was a little disappointed that the trees lining the reflecting pool were not in bloom, but with the rain forcing us to play tourist on Friday, we did miss the crowds of the National Cherry Blossom Festival happening the rest of the weekend, THANK GOODNESS.
On Saturday, I made everyone get up and out of our AirBnB by 9, which they weren’t too happy about, but I’m glad I did. We ended up spending almost all day driving, fighting traffic and taking pictures. Our first stop was Georgetown Waterfront.
I’ve never been to Georgetown. It is quite a quaint little town and while we didn’t take the time to stroll through all of the shops, I would like to go back there someday and do just that. We headed for the water and got to shooting. I absolutely loved Kendra’s first outfit and the black floppy hat just topped off the outfit!
The Blind Whino
The Blind Whino is what used to be a beautiful white church. What a name for a former church, right? It’s now a mosaic of bright colors that is home to art shows and galleries. This place is so awesome. While we were there, we were able to go inside and see some art work done by a local guy, who’s name I didn’t get. Kendra’s black jeans, gold top and this super cute crop black jacket were perfect for all of the color of this location. And those checkered Vans, please!!!!
Out last stop was the Watermelon House. Kendra was pretty much done by then so we didn’t stay long, plus the sun was pretty strong on the Watermelon so we took a couple of shots there and then headed across the street to some gray steps that let her red top and shoes pop!
I think everyone had fun and I know we were all exhausted. My brain was tapped. Driving all of those streets and trying to read all of the signs and deal with city traffic, I was done. I couldn’t wait to sleep in my own bed. But I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. I had fun planning Kendra’s Sweet 16 Photo Session and outfits. It was fun to see her be her beautiful, goofy self in front of the camera. And I only took 469 pictures. Lucky for you I limited them to just some of my favorites for the blog.
What a weekend. I think we all came home exhausted but with awesome memories.
Today, April, 29, 2019, my beautiful, smart, caring Kendra turns 16 years old. I am amazed daily by her simple way of looking at things and making the smallest of things the biggest. She is a light in a sometimes dark world and brings so much joy to my life. This girl, who we thought may never have long hair, now has a gorgeous main of long brunette hair that is full of curls that I’m always jealous of. If not her curls, her amazing messy buns that she makes effortlessly.
Kendra, you bring color to my life and warmth to my heart. Never let this world change your loving heart. YOU are seen. YOU are loved. YOU are wanted…ALWAYS!!!!
Love you forever and ever!
