Castlerigg Wine Shop Front

Last month, I had the pleasure of visiting Castlerigg Wine shop for some Carlisle Pictures.  This is the most recent entry of my Local Blogg Business series. I don’t get to Carlisle often and when I do, it’s rarely to see the beautiful historic houses and buildings that lined South Hanover Street. Castlerigg didn’t disappoint. While purple is my favorite color, seeing it as the accent colors on this building made me smile!

Without further ado….

How long have you been in business?
End of Nov will be my 4th anniversary being open.
Hours and location?
Shop is at 110 South Hanover in Carlisle. Current hours are closed Mon-Tues, 11 am – 7 pm Wed-Thur, 11 am – 10 pm Fri-Sat, 1 pm – 5 pm Sun.
Tell me about your business – what do you do?
I sell wine for 2 PA wineries, Seven Mountains Wine Cellars & The Vineyard at Grandview. We do wine tasting and sell by the bottle to go & by the glass or bottle for enjoyment on premises. We serve light appetizers & desserts to accompany wine consumed here. We also now serve PA beer & distilled spirits for consumption on premises only. We have special wine/food tasting events frequently. We have live music on Sat evenings and occasionally on Fri. We rent for private parties. We have wine related merchandise for the perfect gifts.
Tell me about YOU! Why did you choose to do what you do?
I enjoy visiting wineries to taste different wines and to learn about them. I found myself in need of a new career 4 yrs ago and decided to set up my own tasting room selling some of the best PA wines.

If you sell products, what is your absolute favorite product that everyone must try?
We have close to 60 different wines currently. My favorites are not necessarily the same as the next person. So everyone should come in and taste for themselves! Of course, we are happy to help lead them to the right wine for their own preferences.

When I asked Alan about the mannequin, this was his response:
His name is Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, merriment and general debauchery. The shops on Pomfret Street all have mannequins in their décor one way or another so I wanted one too. A large % of my customers are female so I wanted one that appealed to the ladies. When I saw him I knew he was the right one!
Who was/is your biggest supporter in starting your own business?
The wineries first and foremost but I also had a lot of help from The Cumberland County Housing & Redevelopment Authority as well as the Shippensburg University Small Business Development Council. My sister also help with some much needed capital! Since opening I’ve had a lot of support from The Carlisle Chamber of Commerce, The West Shore Chamber of Commerce. The Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau and the Downtown Carlisle Association and the other businesses downtown.
What other local business do you just LOVE! Why?
I mostly love the restaurants and pubs downtown. They get a lot of my business after I close mine.
Outside of your business, what are you passionate about?
I love the outdoors in general. Hiking in particular.
